The Free Burma Rangers ( FBR) is a multi-ethnic humanitarian service movement working to help free the oppressed in Burma, Syria, Iraq and Kurdistan. Their main area of work is throughout Burma (also known as Myanmar) but concentrate primarily on the heavily forested border region, delivering emergency medical assistance to sick and injured internally displaced people, or IDP's; a consequence of the long running campaign of violence by the military junta, the State Peace and Development Council, against Burma's ethnic minorities. FBR trains teams of men and women in frontline medical treatment and reconnaissance techniques. In addition to delivering humanitarian relief, a secondary role of the teams is to obtain evidence of military violence and human rights abuse. This information is then published in the form of online reports and / or released to larger international human rights groups, inter-governmental organisations such as the UN, and news agencies. FBR is one of a number of grass roots organisations (see Mae Tao Clinic Mae Tao Clinic & Back Pack Health Worker Team Back Pack Health Worker Team) which have emerged in response to the growing health needs of Burma’s persecuted ethnic underclass. FBR are not supported by either the Thai or Burmese authorities and their activity inside the Burmese border is clandestine. Villages were destroyed, people killed and more than 100, 000 people forced from their homes [1] in a program of violence which was designed to remove people from land in order to make way for developing business interests. [2] The history, character and on-going activity of the Rangers is closely linked to its American founder, Tha-U-Wah-A-Pah (the assumed Karen pseudonym, henceforth TUWAP of Dave Eubank): a Fuller Theological Seminary -educated Pastor and ex-member of the U. S. Special Forces. Having already spent a number of years as a missionary in Burma, in 1996, following a chance meeting with Aung San Suu Kyi, the leader of the National League for Democracy, TUWAP was inspired to initiate a ‘Global Day of Prayer’ [1] and help to strengthen unity between the majority Burman population and the various minority ethnic groups. [3] TUWAP was then in Burma during the Army Offensives of 1997, distributing medicine to those displaced by the conflict, and it was during this time that he decided to employ his broad mixture of skills to bring a unique brand of humanitarian relief to a greater number. In the words of the FBR leader, “[The situation in Burma] is a slow, creeping cancer, in which the regime is working to dominate, control, and radically assimilate all the ethnic peoples of the country. ” [4] In January 2013 footage obtained by the Free Burma Rangers and released to the world's media was instrumental in stopping continued Burmese military offensives against the Kachin Independence Army in the north of Myanmar. [5] At least one FBR team was present at the liberation of Mosul, Iraq, in 2017. [6] FBR Teams [ edit] Every year about 15 multi-ethnic teams, including representatives from the Karen, Karenni, Shan, Arakan, Kachin and other ethnic groups complete the intensive Ranger training. The training program is delivered with the help of other specialist organisations, including the Mae Tao Clinic and covers a diverse and comprehensive mix of practical relief, survival skills and socio-political awareness, including: ethnic issues ethics conflict resolution public health first aid advanced medical and basic dental care human rights interviewing and documentation reporting counselling Break down of full-time relief teams by ethnic origin Overview of FBR relief operations since 1997 Total teams trained: 300 Relief missions conducted: over 1, 000 Patients treated: over 550, 000 People helped: over 1, 500, 000 [7] Fields of operation [ edit] FBR teams operate in conflict zones other than Burma, such as the conflict involving ISIS in Syria and Iraq. I was expecting big things of this one and I really wanted to like it.
The minimalist style with it's pale, pastel colors may not be to everybody's taste. I quite liked it though.
But if you make such an artsy-fartsy movie, it better has some substance to go with it.
This is where the movie falls royally short. In fact I would call it a new benchmark in absolute stupidity.
There is so much wrong with the (largely nonexistant) plot, I don't know where to begin.
Warning, here be spoilers!
The plants are grown in a "secure" lab with access restrictions and safety measurements. At one point we see Ben Whishaw's character disinfecting the soles of his shoes after coming out of the greenhouse. Still they think a rag held by elastic bands around the ears is totally fine around experimental plants with possibly dangerous pollen.
Despite all this security, the main character brings one of those experimental plants home to her son and put it in his room, wide open without any security measures at all.
Even when she strongly suspects the plant may be harmful and even after her son shows strange behavior, she still leaves the plant in his room. And for some reason she still is not "infected" herself.
The other colleague who pretends to be infected (without even knowing what that means) exposes herself at a totally random point without any reason or consequences.
Two kids have no problem breaking into the "secure" lab during nighttime and stay undetected. They also steal a plant which is noticed by the staff later but does not really seem to worry anybody.
The only reason I was watching this to the end was my hope of a finale that would make sense and maybe explain some of the holes that were left open.
No such luck though. There is no real ending, it just peters out and then it's over.
If you like earshattering Kabuki-style music, soul-less acting, gaping plotholes and movies that make no sense at all, absolutely go for it. Avoid otherwise.

Art direction/Colors: Highlight of the film.
Soundtrack: Interesting at first, terribly loud/trebly, repetitive and annoying as time goes on.
Script: As i pointed out, there's a lack of a coherent/satisfying ending to the film. I mean, if you missed the final 5 minutes, you'd have missed nothing at all. The thing is, you can almost tell that this would be the case. Far too many movies these days fail to translate a great idea into a decent all round film. They forget that the way you leave audiences is how they tend to remember the film. In 2019, if a viewer invests 2 hours into your artsy experiment, you better have a climax of some sorts. Lazy filmmaking ends up ruining an otherwise memorable albeit eerie movie.

Sortear um número ou jogar um dado é mais Bíblico que votação popular (Atos 1:12-26). Dar poder ao homem é exatamente o contrário do que o Evangelho prega. No Reino de Deus, o Rei é Jesus, e não as outras pessoas. Nós somos servos, seguidores, amigos, mas não quem está no controle de tudo. No Reino de Deus é Ele quem está no comando. O ponto central da democracia é que o povo é quem manda, exatamente o oposto do que acontece no Reino de Deus. Uma monarquia também não é exatamente o que Deus quer. Deus só decidiu estabelecer um rei no Antigo Testamento porque o povo pediu (olha a democracia aí), e os resultados dessa escolha não foram muito boas: houveram reis bons, mas também reis muito ruims, que lideraram o povo de Deus ao desastre e ao exílio. Ou seja, não me parece ser exatamente o que Deus teria em mente para o Seu povo. E antes disso? Deus governava através de uma pessoa, um profeta, um patriarca, como Moisés, Abraão, Samuel (até que Saul veio), entre outros. Nem sempre com bons resultados. Afinal, nem mesmo um profeta subistitui Deus, e como qualquer ser humano, falha. Mas o que veio antes disso? O Governo de Deus no Jardim do Éden Antes do pecado vir ao mundo, Deus conversava livremente com sua criação. E não apenas conversava, mas os guiava. Ou como será que Adão e Eva tomavam decisões sem saber o que é bem ou mal? Lembras? Eles não tinham comido da árvore ainda, não faziam ideia do que era bem ou o que era mal. Só havia uma coisa a fazer: confiar totalmente em Deus. Ele é quem dizia o que era bem e o que era mal, e quem mostrava o caminho a ser seguido. O governo era totalmente de Deus. Ou seja, a política de Deus, o governo de Deus, mais se parece com a de uma ditadura do que a de uma democracia. Atenção:  a palavra ditadura tem uma conotação muito negativa, graças aos famosos ditadores que torturaram (e ainda torturam) seu povo, tudo pelo poder. Mas essencialmente, o governo no Jardim do Éden, e o governo no Céu, é Deus no controle de tudo, e todos obedecendo. Chama do que quiseres, monarquia, ditadura, mas é Deus no controle geral e total. Ou seja, se quisermos trazer esse governo de Deus para a nossa nação, teríamos que trazer Deus no controle geral e total. Afinal, feliz é a nação cujo Deus é o Senhor, certo? Certo, mas mesmo que houvesse um ser humano capaz de representar Deus como governante de uma nação, em nosso mundo isso jamais, em hipótese alguma, funcionaria. Ou seja… O Governo de Deus hoje é impossível Consigo imaginar a reação de certas pessoas com o que acabei de escrever. Mas é verdade, em nosso mundo isso é impossível. Mesmo em uma suposta nação em que 90% das pessoas sejam seguidoras de Jesus e concordem com tudo o que Deus disser através do suposto governante, o que acontece com os outros 10%? Serão obrigados a obedecer a Deus e a seguir a Bíblia? Eu não sei o teu Deus, mas o meu Deus, o Deus da Bíblia, não força ninguém a obedecer nada. Se Ele não forçou Adão e Eva a obedecerem o que Ele disse, por que mudar de opinião agora? Na verdade, Ele deu livre arbítrio a todos, e nós temos o poder de escolher o que fazer: se obedecemos a Deus, ou não. É claro que todas as nossas escolhas tem consequências. Isso não foi diferente com Adão e Eva, e não vai ser diferente com ninguém. Se Deus deu livre arbítrio às pessoas, quem somos nós para removê-lo? Achamos que sabemos mais do que Deus? Pfff. É por isso que hoje, como seguidores de Jesus, vivemos entre dois mundos, esse mundo e o novo mundo, onde Deus estará para sempre no poder, e onde nós vamos confiar plenamente nEle. E seremos muito felizes. Mas esse não é o mundo em que vivemos atualmente, e não é por muito tentar maquiar que vamos implantar um céu na terra. Ou seja, o governo de Deus será pleno apenas na eternidade. E agora? O que fazer? Qual a solução? Tenho 4 sugestões: 1. Ora pelos governantes A Bíblia é muito clara sobre isso, não preciso explicar. 2. Não sejas tolo na hora de votar Te informa, pesquisa, e vota consciente. Se achas que as coisas não estão boas, não vai votar nos mesmos governantes ruins só para manter o que já existe. Não sejas tolo. “Mas a democracia não é de Deus! Para que votar? Vou votar nulo”. Ah é? Votar nulo ou branco é deixar os outros escolherem. Não, não é uma forma de protesto, é uma forma de demonstrar burrice. És tão inseguro de tuas próprias convicções que vais deixar os outros escolherem o futuro da tua nação no teu lugar? Bom, nesse caso talvez seja melhor assim mesmo. 3. Expressa tua opinião Não é porque segues Jesus que não podes expressar tua opinião. Se tens convicção de algo, é melhor demonstrar, talvez ajude alguém. Se o governo é ruim, não há nada de errado em protestar, reclamar, mas não vais esquecer de votar (leia o número 2). 4. A solução é uma só: A Igreja de Jesus Jesus só deixou uma instituição: a Igreja. Jesus, através da Igreja, é a solução para todos os problemas do mundo. Não concorda? Vai ler a Bíblia. A Igreja tem a solução para problemas sociais, emocionais, físicos, espirituais. Se segues Jesus e não dedicas tempo e/ou dinheiro para avançar a obra e o Reino de Deus na terra, há algo errado. Nesse mundo só existem duas instituições criadas por Deus: a família, e a Igreja, e como seguidores de Jesus nos dedicarmos a elas é o mínimo que devemos fazer. In January, I stood behind some 30 or so people full of hopes, dreams, fantasies, and faith. I was waiting to buy a pack of cigarettes; they, on the other hand, were buying lottery tickets. One of the largest prizes the United States had ever seen was on offer, 1. 6 billion dollars. For a few dollars, each of the people in front of me would receive a piece of paper with numbers proving they’d participated. A few days later, a public ritual would divine a set of numbers, and if those numbers matched what was printed on the tickets, the bearer of that receipt would win and become unfathomably wealthy. As I watched the slow procession of the devoted waiting their turn at the register, it was hard not to think about other public rituals I’d witnessed. Add some incense and black clothing, and the counter could easily be a communion rail, the white slips of paper the sacred host conveying a chance at divine blessing. It also felt a bit like election day, each lottery participant registering their preference and performing a civic duty, compelled by their fear of poverty and their hopes for a better world. It was difficult to ignore the emotions of those around me, their hearts swelling with possibility. No more worries. No more trudging to work each morning after waking the kids for school, coming home tired to make dinner and scrape some moment of their own out of the evening before the cycle began again. Their kids could go to college. They could move somewhere better, help their mother get that surgery she needed, put their grandfather in a better hospice.  Life might finally change. Freedom from fear and struggle. Travel, luxury, a good life. No spiritually-minded person can miss the metaphysical aspects of a lottery. Each person certainly had their heart and mind full of intention, millions of people holding images of what-might-be as they handed over their last $5 in exchange for symbols and ciphers on slips of paper. Though each had probably heard the odds (292 million, or a little less than the population of the United States, to 1), each nonetheless held a faith that they might be unique, be chosen, and receive the power to manifest their will. Watching them, feeling the pressure of their process, I found myself thinking of my own hopes, what I might do with that much money. The commercial slogan of many state lotteries resounded in my head, echoed verbally by the people in front of me: “You can’t win if you don’t play” Wasn’t I being foolish to spend money on cigarettes instead of a chance to change my life? Wasn’t my abstention from the collective fantasy an empty protest and a self-defeating prophesy? I wouldn’t win one and a half billion dollars, because I wouldn’t buy a ticket. I couldn’t, because I wouldn’t play. When it was finally my turn at the counter, I bought my pack of cigarettes, rode my bike back to my sister’s place, and chain-smoked by a fire pit the rest of the night, contemplating my stubborn refusal to participate in a rigged system. I t’s election season in the United States, a period which began a full year-and-a-half ago, one that will start again two-and-a-half years from now. Millions of people will be casting their ballots on paper or automated machines, registering their hopes and fears and awaiting the pronouncements of the civic oracles. I don’t vote in national elections. I’m one of those people, the stubborn cynics who refuse to participate no matter the stakes. I’m told the stakes for this election are higher than they’ve ever been, not 1. 6 billion dollars, but the fate of America, of women and minorities, of peace and prosperity. My own fate as a queer leftist, the fate of my Black lover (who likewise doesn’t vote), the fates of all my women and trans friends. Healthcare, foreign war, domestic security, and global warming all hang in the balance. But all I can do is shake my head and shrug. I wasn’t always so cynical about American elections.  In 2000, I gave a lot of my time to the campaign of Ralph Nader, helping to disrupt a rally by Al Gore with a group of other queers. Al Gore opposed equal rights for gays, opposed marriage equality, and was greenwashing capitalism. Despite the fact that the other major party’s candidate scared me dreadfully, I decided I was too young to be ruled by fear and coerced into voting against my conscience. Four years later, I participated in the caucuses and attended rallies for Howard Dean, whose campaign was suddenly obliterated by the strangest logic I’d ever heard. “Kerry is Electable, ” went the party-line at the caucus, uttered by the well-dressed upper-class whites who looked at the rest of us as unruly, unrealistic dreamers.  Embittered at the Democratic Party machine, I voted for Róger Calero, the Socialist Worker’s Party candidate–technically ineligible because he’s Nicaraguan. 2008 brought a fresh slate, and what felt like a breath of fresh air. Eight years of George W. Bush were over, and there was a Black candidate running for office! Everyone was so excited, as was I. I’d never gotten to vote for a Black presidential candidate before! No way was I going to miss such a historic opportunity, so I voted for Cynthia McKinney. Obama won instead. Black, but male. Still, lots of amazing promises, like shutting down Guantanamo Bay and getting US soldiers out of the Middle East. At last check, Guantanamo Bay still exists ( but has solar power now! ), and, well, you probably know how the Middle East is going. I didn’t vote in 2012, and I won’t in 2016, either. I won’t be voting for either of the two major party candidates, nor for any of the 29 other candidates running for president. I won’t be voting at all. Lots of people have lots of arguments why such a position is wrong. Some suggest it’s a sign of my ‘privilege’ to abstain. Some have told me it’s anti-feminist not to vote for the Democratic candidate, or that immigrants will destroy America if I don’t vote for the Republican candidate, or if I vote for no-one I’m ‘wasting my vote, ’ or that by not voting I’m giving tacit consent to evil. And, like every four years, the tired argument is pulled out that if ‘you don’t vote, you can’t complain. ’ It’s not much different from the lottery argument:  If you don’t play, you can’t win.  Just like the lottery, though, what isn’t said is that even if you do play, you and millions of other people will lose anyway. N ation-States are mythic constructs which hold the power of life and death over the people they rule. Born at the same time as capitalism and private-property, rising from the ashes of the theocratic power of the Church, the Nation holds the same sway over our souls and bodies as did once Priest and King. Liberal Democracy puts a fascinating facade over the Nation’s power. Rather than unelected Monarchs we have elected Presidents, rather than a community of believers we have a faceless mass of fellow citizens who, like us, supposedly give our consent to be ruled. I never consented. I signed no documents, made no verbal agreements, and never once stated I’d like a rich person to make decisions which determine where I can go in the world, how I subsist, whom I love, and how I and others might die. Undoubtedly, none of the recently murdered Blacks gave their consent to be sacrificed on the altars of American Capitalism, none of the indigenous people whose ancestral lands are destroyed for pipelines said ‘yes, please’ to the government who approved their displacement. Likewise, the land under us never asked to be raped to make way for highways and landfills, there’s no record of rivers and lakes agreeing to be poisoned for the greater good, to sate the extractive lust of the United States and all it claims to represent. To demand my vote is to demand my consent for the horror that America does in my name, be that the imprisonment of millions for property and drug crimes here or the obliteration of children to get at the oil they’re living atop in the Middle East. Insisting I must ‘play’ in order to ‘win’ is a sick joke at best when the jackpot is only the hope of less slaughter of others and a little less poverty for myself. At worse, it’s the language of the abuser and the rapist. If you don’t say no, it means yes–yet even if you do say no, it still means yes because they have power. The mass ritual of voting for who will be the new face of the Leviathan sucks everyone into a vortex of celebrity-worship, displacing radical political actions onto candidates resembling our hopes and dreams. Meanwhile, some get richer, drowning in revenue from campaign advertisements, just as State coffers swell with sales from lottery tickets. That the same massive media corporations who shape our perception of the world and the urgency of our vote make the most money from the election frenzy is hardly accidental. At the end of August, the two major presidential candidates raised over $708 million dollars. By November, this figure may approach $1 billion, not quite as much as the lottery in January but certainly enough to convince millions of people to line up in a massive public ritual. In the end, the juggernaut of America lurches on, fed by blood of dark-skinned people and black coal and oil. No vote to end the American nightmare will ever be on the ballot, no tick-box asking me if I’d like to end capitalism will ever be available to check. At the end of this upcoming election night, as the Diviners pronounce to the world who ‘won, ’ I’ll be sitting in front of that fire pit again, thinking about the lottery, about the myth of the Nation, and wondering if we’ll ever realize that the world we want isn’t something we can ever vote for. Muitos clássicos infantis com histórico racista continuam não sendo discutidos em sociedades em que ainda há um abismo entre brancos e negros. Caro leitor. Aconteceu. Chegou o dia de mexer em um vespeiro particularmente cabuloso. Você pode me achar cruel. Pode espernear, se descabelar, sapatear. Pode abrir as janelas e gritar que a vida não é justa, que preferia nunca ter nascido. Nada disso vai mudar a realidade. Caro leitor. Já passou da hora de falarmos sobre o racismo em alguns ícones amados da sua infância. Ei, senhora! SENHORA! Não é porque é fim de ano que a gente pode parar de problematizar! SENHORA! Já começo a ouvir o eco de um coro chorão ao fundo. Parece que ele diz algo como: “Ah, vá se catar! São só desenhos, historinhas. Tem coisa muito pior que isso no mundo! ”. Ah é? Tem coisa muito pior do que bombardear crianças em formação com narrativas e estereótipos racistas em um país onde negros ainda são amplamente marginalizados? Sim, suponho que exista coisa pior que isso mesmo. Como a execução de cinco crianças negras  pela polícia no Rio de Janeiro, por exemplo. Ou o fato de 77% dos jovens vítimas de homicídio no Brasil serem negros. Por isso mesmo precisamos falar sobre racismo em desenhos, livros e programas infantis. Fechar os olhos para questões como essa é falhar em entender o racismo como um sistema complexo, que abrange todas as áreas da sociedade de modo a manter a exclusão e vulnerabilidade da população negra. A manutenção de entretenimento racista para crianças – mesmo que sutil – é uma faceta dessa sistema. Por um lado, ela ajuda a formar nas crianças brancas a ideia de que pessoas negras são inferiores e menos importantes. Habituadas a ver personagens negros como figurantes inferiorizados tanto na televisão como no cotidiano, essas crianças crescerão para, na melhor das hipóteses, se tornar adultos que simplesmente não pensam e nem se sensibilizam com a marginalização e a destituição de direitos da população negra. Isso explica um pouco a nossa empatia seletiva. Inúmeros jovens negros são assassinados todos os anos, inclusive pela própria polícia que deveria protegê-los, mas não fazemos nem um décimo de escândalo e de luto por eles do que quando um jovem branco é a vítima. Por outro lado, a criança negra também está sujeita a ter a sua formação diretamente afetada pelas narrativas racistas que vemos em clássicos infantis. Autoestima, autoconfiança – tudo isso pode ser afetado na criança negra habituada a enxergar personagens negros serem retratados sempre de forma negativa e inferiorizada. Ou mesmo a não enxergar qualquer personagem negro na ficção. A falta de personagens negros nas histórias é um golpe especialmente perverso, pois fortalece essa noção de que pessoas negras, apesar de serem a maioria no país, são meras figurantes sem importância. Representatividade importa. Dessa forma, o entretenimento racista para crianças ajuda – junto com inúmeros outros mecanismos institucionais, linguísticos e midiáticos – a criar tanto o opressor como o oprimido. Falemos sobre isso, então. E pensemos que os exemplos abaixo são apenas alguns em um mar de racismo que a gente teima em não ver. Vamos começar com um dos meus desenhos favoritos quando criança… Tom e Jerry Antes de começar, é preciso falar de dois estereótipos e práticas profundamente racistas que permeiam a mídia e o entretenimento até os dias de hoje. Em primeiro lugar, temos o arquétipo da Mammy. A mammy seria uma mulher negra de meia idade, escrava ou ex-escrava doméstica de uma família branca. Gorda, supersticiosa, assexuada, cozinheira de mão cheia e sempre adornada com um avental e lenço na cabeça, a mammy normalmente atua como ama-de-leite/babá das crianças da família, além de realizar todos os afazeres domésticos e fazer as vezes de conselheira da patroa. Sua vida é servir, o que ela faz com prazer e muito senso de humor. Ah – e como os brancos são muito bonzinhos, a mammy é sempre muito querida e considerada como um membro da família. E não dá pra ser racista se você considera sua empregada negra como parte da família, néam? Não, tudo errado. O surgimento do personagem da Mammy aconteceu nos EUA, na segunda metade do século XIX, e dominou por muito tempo o imaginário dos americanos, que tentavam de todo jeito reescrever a história para fingir que a escravidão não foi tão ruim assim. O estereótipo da Mammy é racista, porque essa escrava doméstica negra amada pela família branca nunca existiu. A maioria das escravas e servas domésticas eram adolescentes ou jovens – a expectativa média de vida delas era de 33 anos de idade – e elas costumavam ser usadas pelos senhores como escravas sexuais. A mammy é, portanto, um perverso revisionismo, com o objetivo de minimizar as atrocidades da escravidão e manter as mulheres negras confinadas a posições subalternas. Em segundo lugar, temos a prática racista do blackface. O blackface é o ato de pintar o rosto de preto e os lábios de vermelho de forma caricata, com o objetivo de interpretar uma pessoa negra. E quando eu digo ‘interpretar’, eu quero dizer ‘esculhambar’. A prática surgiu por volta de 1830, quando homens brancos se pintavam e se apresentavam para a aristocracia branca escravista com o objetivo de ridicularizar a população negra. Mais tarde, a prática se tornou corrente no cinema e na televisão, sendo que ainda hoje vemos gente usando-a como se fosse nada demais. Esse ano mesmo, pleno 2015, a peça A Mulher do Trem, da companhia teatral Os Fofos Encenam, foi cancelada depois que inúmeras manifestações de repúdio nas redes sociais denunciaram o uso de blackface na peça. De acordo com a filósofa Djamila Ribeiro, o black face “serve tanto como estereótipo racista quanto como forma de exclusão, porque se no primeiro caso ridiculariza, no segundo nega papéis a artistas negros. ” Pois bem. Agora que você já sabe tudo isso, vai entender por que a Amazon Prime Instant Video tascou-lhe uma advertência para Tom e Jerry na sua fila de streaming, avisando que “Tom e Jerry pode retratar alguns preconceitos étnicos e raciais que já foram comuns na sociedade americana. Tais representações eram erradas então e são erradas hoje em dia. ” Basicamente, o desenho usa e abusa tanto do estereótipo da Mammy – representada pela dona do Tom – como da prática de blackface. Olha ela aí. E tem isso também… E… Ok, já chega, né? As Aventuras de Babar Integrando um repertório de programas infantis de qualidade inquestionável da TV Cultura, as aventuras do reizinho elefante Babar foi um clássico da minha infância. É possível que agora, depois de adulto, tudo o que você lembra de Babar seja a sua voz suave e sua predileção por ternos em cor verde vibrante, por isso vou tecer uma singela descrição do desenho pra você: O desenho As Aventuras de Babar foi baseado nos livros do francês Jean de Brunhoff, Histoire de Babar. Basicamente, ele conta a história de um elefante chamado Babar que é resgatado por uma senhorinha francesa quando sua mãe é morta por um caçador. Levado para uma grande cidade (Paris, nos livros), Babar é criado como um ser humano. Ao ficar sabendo que seu bando ainda corre perigo por causa do caçador, Babar retorna ao lar, resolve o problema com todo o seu conhecimento humano, e vira rei. Ele, então, introduz a sociedade dos elefantes à cultura européia…er…quer dizer, humana, e todos os elefantes ficam super felizes, vestindo roupas, ouvindo música clássica e sendo governados por um ditador benevolente. Quem liga para democracia, não é mesmo? Se Babar parece uma grande propaganda colonialista, com os elefantes sendo “civilizados” com cultura européia e amando tudo isso, é porque provavelmente é. O primeiro livro da série foi escrito em 1931, no auge da colonização francesa na África. Nesse contexto, era comum a ideia de superioridade do “civilizado” povo francês em relação aos “selvagens” africanos – ideia que se traduz em Babar, não só pelo fato de ele ser reverenciado pelos outros elefantes por ter sido criado nos moldes europeus, mas também pelas inúmeras vezes em que regiões fora do governo de Babar são retratadas, sempre populadas por homens violentos e selvagens de pele preta e grandes lábios vermelhos. Aqui… E aqui… Bem, já entendemos, né? Embora o criador de Babar tenha sido Jean de Brunhoff, grande parte da coleção foi escrita e desenhada pelo seu filho, Laurent de Brunhoff. Hoje com 90 anos, de Brunhoff concorda que os livros contém um claro teor de propaganda colonialista e chegou a pedir ao editor que recolhesse um dos livros – Babar’s Picnic – por sentir vergonha do seu conteúdo. Tintim no Congo Ah, quem não lembra com saudosismo das aventuras de Tintim, o repórter que mais se meteu em confusão na história da animação mundial? Embora tenha gozado de imenso sucesso, no entanto, Tintim não ficou livre de incorporar os mais grotescos ideais racistas e colonialistas das primeiras décadas do século XX, sendo que um dos livros da série que originou o desenho chegou a ser banido em algumas partes do mundo. Estou falando do livro Tintim no Congo, lançado na década de 1930 e recheado de estereótipos abomináveis de povos africanos. Basicamente, todas as pessoas que Tintim encontra no Congo são como crianças com graves problemas neurológicos, que o recebem como um grande mestre benevolente que chegou para salvá-los de sua incurável incompetência e inferioridade. Hergé, o escritor de Tintim, reproduzia em seus livros o pensamento belga da época sobre o Congo – um país que por anos foi propriedade privada do rei belga Leopoldo II, que conseguiu exterminar metade da população congolesa com seu governo escravista e genocida. Mais tarde, o próprio Hergé, escritor de Tintim, admitiu se sentir envergonhado pelo livro. Recentemente, o livro foi levado a julgamento na Bélgica, mas inocentado, o que nos leva ao último e brasileiríssimo item da lista… O Sítio do Pica-Pau Amarelo (Monteiro Lobato) É, é, eu sei. Todo mundo já está careca de saber que Monteiro Lobato era racista confesso. O problema é que mesmo todo mundo sabendo disso, o cara ainda é endeusado como um dos mais importantes escritores brasileiros. Mesmo apresentando personagens negras subservientes, pouco inteligentes e comparando-as a animais como macacos e urubus, e abusando de estereótipos racistas… A icônica Tia Anastácia é uma clássica representação da mammy, em versão brasileira… …suas obras continuam gozando de imenso prestígio. Mesmo tendo escrito um livro em que o final feliz é a aniquilação da raça negra… “Acontecem coisas tremendas, mas vence por fim a inteligência do branco” – Lobato resumindo seu livro O Presidente Negro para o amigo Godofredo Rangel. Quando não consegue achar editor nos EUA para o livro, escreve “Meu romance não encontra editor. (…) Acham-no ofensivo à dignidade americana. (…) Errei vindo cá tão verde. Devia ter vindo no tempo em que eles linchavam os negros. ” … seus livros continuam fazendo parte do Programa Nacional Biblioteca na Escola, sem qualquer exigência de capacitação de professores para discussão e contextualização em sala de aula. Mesmo tendo sido um grande  entusiasta do Ku Klux Klan … “País de mestiços, onde branco não tem força para organizar uma Kux-Klan (sic), é país perdido para altos destinos […] Um dia se fará justiça ao Ku-Klux-Klan; tivéssemos aí uma defesa desta ordem, que mantém o negro em seu lugar, e estaríamos hoje livres da peste da imprensa carioca — mulatinho fazendo jogo do galego, e sempre demolidor porque a mestiçagem do negro destrói a capacidade construtiva” – em carta de 1928, a Arthur Neiva. …e da eugenia   – inclusive pela literatura… “É um processo indireto de fazer eugenia, e os processos indiretos, no Brasil, work muito mais eficientemente” – em carta de 1930, sobre o polêmico livro Caçadas de Pedrinho. …o Dia Nacional do Livro Infantil, 18 de abril, foi instituído em homenagem a ele, na data de seu aniversário. Basicamente, no caso de Lobato, a sociedade brasileira não se contenta em simplesmente fechar os olhos e fingir que racismo não existe, como costuma fazer na maioria das vezes. Não, nesse caso ela descaradamente dá de ombros e diz “É, ele e seus livros eram racistas mesmo. E daí? ”. O que me parece consideravelmente mais assustador.
