Klimov's wife makes some wicked good movies too. Btw neither Czechoslovakia, nor France, nor Greece were communist countries. In Greece first the Italians attacked. The Greeks said Ohi, No, and the Italians which were much more were beaten back, Then several countries. Italy, Germany, Bulgaria attacked Greece. A small country cannot oppose sevaral greater countires at once. So at Distome the Germans showed their real faces. And every country had its criminals which were recruited in the SS.
God, I love this movie. Man, thank you for the review. Hard to believe, that translated version touched you as original touched us, native speakers. But it is not only about spoken text there. It could be probably a movie without dialogues with almost the same effect. This is the only movie, I still cannot watch for the second time, after about 25 years of the first time seeing it. It is so realistic and immersive, that you feel yourself put in the middle of the war. I have grown up in Belarus, hearing all that stories from all the elder people around and what you see in the movie is the accumulated truth.

Come and See is the original version of "Saving the Private Ryan" movie by Steven Spielberg, he even correlated his movie to Come and See by Emir Klimov. This movie "Come and See" had a really nice plot to it; really scary and gruesome. No wonder it was said that you will use all your five senses into this film, and that was really true; the film made me hear what the protagonist was hearing, it made me feel how they were suffering in the war, what they were going through, touch what they were feeling on their skin on what they were going through, taste what they were tasting by the foul face expression they were making, smell what they smelled and see what they was seeing, which really impacted me, it made me feel like as if I was going through what they were going, it gave me a sense of trauma by all the events that happened. Klimov did an excellent job in making his audience feel as if they were the ones experiencing what the protagonist was going through.

The best movie in portraying the horrors of war that you could possibly watch, however this is one of those that you probably don't want to revisit again after seeing it. It's extremely devestading and realistically horrific, there's nothing sentimental, melodramatic or glorified about this where I would imagine most Hollywood studios would usually try to compromise and sugar-coat it in some sort of way. You have a realistic depiction of the atrocities commited in wars and in the core of all of this, the resulting descent into madness of a child soldier. I can endure and watch a lot of stuff without being too invested that I actually forget I'm watching something fictional on a screen, I'm almost most of the time aware that I'm watching actors portraying characters with a film crew on set. But this felt extremely real to the point where that conscious barrier between movie and audience was broken and it felt like those events were actually happening, there just happened to be a camera capturing all of this.

Always thought this scene would be more meaningful if a picture of Stalin was also included and duly shot. Considering this butcher Stalin, as Russias leader, brought this war down on his people through connivance AKA Molotov/Ribbentrop Pact. Too bad both sides couldn't have lost; Korean Vietnam wars wouldn' have happened and China would have had a chance to democritize. Oh well, what if, then again, why? and who gives a shit? never mind.

While most armies can be restrained from pillage if the commander and the officers really want to, so this does not excuse Wellington and his crew at all. Concerning this cheap Marxist propaganda flick here, I guess the historical core of it is the usual clash between a regular army and irregular partisan bands, which does always produce great carnage as one may know from the pictures of Goya or the Vietnam War.
And perhaps: Zulu, Gladiator and Spartacus. This movie was the perfect way to show the reality of what war is. It's not glorious; it's not all about being a hero for your country; and it's not about honor. It's extremely hostile, brutal, violent, traumatizing, and heart wrenching. As a regular citizen you only see the "honorable" side of it; but as soldier or even a family member of a soldier you know otherwise.
Personally I believe that a message Klimov was trying to send to his audience is that this war was purely created by Hitler and if he did not exist WWII would have never happened. I came to this conclusion based on the regressive montage that occurs at the end of the film with the protagonist. As he shoots a picture of Hitler the screen cuts to scenes of Hitler and the tragic events of the war played BACKWARDS. It continues go to further and further back through this wars history to the point where it is a picture of baby Hitler and his mother.
What's great about it is that you get to hear the story of World War II from the perspective of the Russians (something our American textbooks don't necessarily do) and what THEY went through. It strikes you emotionally not only because their experience of the war was extremely sad and traumatizing, but also because Klimov's cinematography sucks you into the situation and creates deep and true emotion within you.
